Users want Facebook to be much more than just a place for posting vacation pictures and sharing their status as some even want the world’s largest online social network to play cupid.
One such person is Jyothi KG from Kerala and she used the social networking giant to find a suitable groom for herself.
The 28-year-old woman posted a matrimonial ad with her picture, address and mobile number on Facebook on April 26 and it soon became viral with over 11,000 likes and more than 6,000 likes.
“I am unmarried. If my friends know anyone, do let me know. I have no demands. Both caste and horoscope don’t matter. My parents aren’t alive. I have studied B.SC in Fashion Designing. I am 28 years old. My brother is working in Mumbai and my sister is a student. Here’s my address,” Jyothi said.
She was flooded with marriage proposals and her post saw men showing their interest in marrying her as their details with her. And, those not interested in marrying her sent her their best wishes.
But Jyothi also wanted to address a larger issue through her ad.
She wrote a personal letter to Facebook’s chief executive Mark Zuckerburg asking him to start matrimonial services for people who have faced “exploitation by matrimonial sites and brokers.”
“Mr. Mark please consider my request and give a facility to select grooms and brides with the search option in country, state, district, name, gender, education, age, profession and religion base. #FacebookMatrimony will help gents and ladies to escape from the prison of horoscope, castes, luxury, lavishness etc (sic),” she wrote.
Looks like Zuckerberg is listening.
He announced on Tuesday that Facebook will launch a new dating app on the social media platform to compete with popular services like Tinder, which will focus on helping people find “real long-term relationships – not just hookups”.
Last year, 34-year-old Ranjish Manjeri from Kerala’s Malappuram district did find help on Facebook and received marriage proposals from all across the world after posting a similar ad.
